News From Prince George Electric Cooperative
Prince George Electric Cooperative (PGEC) has completed its cost of service study and the appropriate rates needed in order to cover its current costs. PGEC will file for a 7.56% rate increase with the Virginia State Corpopration Commission to be effective for electric use on and after September 1, 2009.
Q Why are my rates going up?
A The price increases your cooperative has seen for necessary materials and operating expenses have been avoided due to growth and operational efficiencies. PGEC has held off on a rate increase for as long as possible while still providing you with the service you want and deserve.
Q My bill already changes with the "fuel factor". Does this mean a second increase in rates?
A No. Your electric bill is divided into two components. One is the energy or actual kilowatt hours of electricity that runs through your meter to power lights, appliances, electronics, etc. The fuel factor is one part of those existing energy/electricity rates. The fuel rate is adjusted on a semi-annual basis and will continue to be adjusted over time.
The other part of your bill relates to the physical structures in place to deliver/distribute the electricity to you. Things such as poles, transformers, wire, truck fuel, construction costs, etc. and the maintenance of these materials are all part of the distribution costs. The requested increase impacts this part of your bill.
Q When was the last rate increase for PGEC?
A The last general rate increase for PGEC customers was in 1984. We have found that, after 25 years, it is necessary to institute this rate increase at this time to maintain and improve our quality of service to you, our members.
Q How will this rate increase affect my monthly bill?
A PGEC has applied for an overall rate increase of 7.56%. The average kilowatt hours of electricity used by our membership is 1,357 per month. With the new rate structure, that bill would increase about $13.57 per month.
This is your cooperative. We are here to serve you now and into the future. We thank you for your loyalty and commitment and pledge to continue giving you the service you deserve.
