PGEC Rate Filing

Prince George Electric Cooperative (PGEC) has completed its cost of service study in order to determine the most practical rate structure and the appropriate rates needed in order to cover its current costs. We will file for a 7.56% rate increase with the State Corporation Commission to be effective for electric use on and after September 1, 2009.

We have filed this rate increase out of our necessity to keep up with rising costs of materials and purchased energy. Distribution rate increases to our membership have been avoided due to growth and operational efficiencies, however these factors can not sustain an organization indefinitely. This can be evidenced in the fact that PGEC has not asked for a distribution rate increase since April 1984.

For the average residential customer using:

Energy Usage Estimated Additional Charge
600 kilowatt hours $9.44 Per Month
1,320 kilowatt hours $13.57 Per Month (average member use)
3,000 kilowatt hours $23.21 Per Month

There are two basic costs involved in providing your electric service:
  1. electricity / energy
  2. distribution / delivery of electricity to your home or business. PGEC does not control the actual cost of electricity. This component is billed to our membership with out mark up on a pass through basis. Our rate filing will only impact the cost of us delivering electricity. The rate filing also asks to structure rates to more clearly define the costs for electricity versus the cost for distributing electricity.

In the future, the cost of electricity will continue to be the most volatile portion of your electric bill. As demand for electricity increases while generation of electricity does not, prices will likely continue to increase. Even though the long term solution to our energy problems relies in a comprehensive energy plan through our legislators, there is a lot we can do in the short term in order to ease the impact.

Prince George Electric Cooperative has been working to provide our membership with tools that will enable us to conserve electricity and use electricity wisely. A new time of use rate structure included in our rate filing is a first step toward providing discounts for the use of electricity during off peak hours.

We have tools on our web site that provide guidance for improving the energy efficiency of your home. There is also information here about Farm Credit Loans for energy efficiency projects. You can call toll free at 800-919-FARM. The Weatherization program provides free energy evaluations and services based on income levels and the Emergency Home Repair Programs (EHRP) are a matching payment program for energy efficiencies. Contact information for these two programs can also be found by visiting our Weatherization page.

The cooperative itself has taken measures to reduce energy usage by installing remote meter reading equipment, and instituting measures as simple as cutting lights back during the middle of the day during peak hours. Our goal is to create an environment that will allow our members the resources to combat the rising cost of energy in the future.

The specific proposed rate changes can be seen in the attached information.  (PDF Document 259 KB)
