National Cut Your Energy Costs Day: How doing your part can save on your bill

Jan 10, 2024

Each year, National Cut Your Energy Costs Day occurs on Jan. 10. This is a day set aside to encourage home and business owners to eliminate wasteful energy practices in favor of more efficient ones.

Prince Geroge Electric Cooperative encourages members to consider these simple tips to save energy and lower their winter energy bills:

  • Make sure you and your family don’t leave unnecessary lights on.

  • Windows leak heat.  Consider closing shades and drapes during the day to help keep your home warmer in the winter.

  • Air can transfer in and out of homes through cracks, crevices, and holes.  Avoid air infiltration by sealing around pipe penetrations coming through the walls of your home.

  • Drying clothes can use a lot of energy.  Don’t over-dry your clothes.  If 30 minutes works, don’t set it for 50 minutes.

  • Make sure your water heater is set at the lowest point.  Try setting it to 120 degrees.

  • PGEC’s SmartHub mobile app helps you take control of your energy use. See what appliances are using the most energy, set up high usage alerts and more! Download the app and let SmartHub work for you.
