Co-op partners with local school for annual interactive Career Day initiative

Mar 13, 2024

When Southampton Academy parent Lexi Jones had the inspiration of a Career Day for their students, she did so with the desire to share the value of bringing in various professionals from the area to interact and impact children. Recently, Prince George Electric Cooperative employees had the chance to participate in the annual event to speak to more than 50 students about the co-op business model, potential careers, training, internships, and scholarship opportunities.

“While the co-op’s core operation is to provide members with reliable electricity, the commitment doesn’t stop there,” says Brittany Tann, the co-op’s senior communications specialist. “As a community partner, investing in our youth speaks to the co-op’s mission of improving the quality of life both now and in our future.”

As a mother of three Southampton Academy students, Jones recalls attending a Career Fair a few years back.  “What I witnessed was a yearning for more in-depth conversations and time with each professional to really understand career path opportunities, educational and training requirements, experience, and advancement,” Jones expresses.  “I wanted our children to know of the opportunities that await them post-graduation - with awareness of trades, industry, government, education, healthcare, agriculture and more.”

From that, she designed a Career Day - a day designated to spend quality time interacting and learning from professionals like those at PGEC.

PGEC employees attending this year’s event were Austin Cherrix, Apprentice Lineman, Holden Dunn, Journeyman Lineman, Kristy Miles, HR Specialist, and Brittany Tann.

“As an HR professional of more than 9 years, these opportunities allow us to help shape the future leaders and community workforce,” says Miles.

Jones says that the overwhelming support from the community professionals has been incredible. “We look forward to continuing this in the years ahead!”
