Simple tips to help you keep your energy use in check

Feb 2, 2024

While hot chocolate and cozy sweaters are favorites of this winter season, tumbling temperatures often make heating systems work harder and create weather conditions that can lead to power outages. Whether Punxsutawney Phil sees his shadow or not, you can still prepare for the effects of cold weather and manage your energy use by keeping simple tips in mind during the winter months.

  • Connect with your co-op. Join many of your friends and neighbors in our social spaces, and get real-time updates about energy efficiency, our community, power outages and more. Connect at www.facebook.com/ PrinceGeorgeElectricCooperative.

  • Drop the inside temperature. When it’s cold outside, your heating system has to work harder to heat your home. By lowering the thermostat a few degrees to 68 or as low as is comfortable, you can reduce your energy use – and your bill.

  • Then, layer up. By adding blankets to beds and sofas, and wearing layers of warm clothing, you’ll be cozy and comfortable even if your home is a few degrees cooler.

  • Stock up.Winter conditions, especially icy precipitation, can cause power outages. Just in case, keep emergency supplies on hand. Include flashlights and extra batteries, food and water (for humans and pets), essential medications, salt for icy sidewalks and driveways, and a battery-powered radio to stay connected.

  • Keep outage communications at your fingertips. In the event of an outage, be sure to keep your mobile device handy to communicate and receive updates.  Report your outage by texting “OUT” to 855-939-3608.  Haven’t signed up for outage texting? Members can sign up via the SmartHub mobile app.  Sign into your PGEC SmartHub account and add up to two mobile phone numbers under “Manage Account”.  Please note that your cell phone plan’s standard text messaging and data rates apply.

As the temperature drops, our commitment remains the same: to provide you with excellent electric service and powerful information to help you manage your energy use and weather any storm. No matter what conditions this season brings, Prince Geroge is prepared, and we hope you are prepared, too.
